Give Something To Get Something

One of my favorite fitness teachers and personal trainers is Billy Blanks, founder of the TaeBo fitness empire and school of martial arts. Billy is often heard calling out in his lovable gruff voice, "You gotta give somethin' to get somethin'!"

This truism applies not just to the world of exercise and physical fitness, but also to the spiritual world. In fact, it is a restating of one of the laws of the Universe, and therefore applies to all things. The Bible (King James Version) states in Luke 6:38, "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." In more modern language, this means that what we give is what we get, with extra added back to us.
We live in a Universe of constant expansion, one which magnifies and increases all vital things. In our world, everything that lives grows and increases, either in size, age, amount, ability, etc. Our offerings to the world also grow and increase before they return to us. This is a wonderful insight that we can apply to increase the good that we desire in our lives.
Rather than trying to get the things we need and want, we can more effectively give something related to what we want, with the expectation of a manifold return. For example, if you need a certain amount of money, give a small amount of money to someone or some institution that you feel drawn to. Expect to see your money return to you in an increased amount, and you will. If you want some new friends, extend friendship to someone else first, and you can be certain that in the near future you will find people seeking you out for friendship.
One of the keys to effectively applying this principle is not to have any expectation about the source of your returned good. Your return will, most likely, not come from the same person or group to whom you first gave. If you give with faith in the Divine's ability and faithfulness to always magnify and return your good offerings, there is no need to be concerned with what others choose to do with what you give them. Keep your attention on the principle, not the personality, and you will always get back in kind a lot more than you give!
